SQA Higher Biology grade boundaries: what an A actually takes

How SQA Higher Biology grade boundaries are set, roughly what raw mark an A has needed in recent years, and how to build the margin you need.

Every year the same question goes round: what mark do I need for an A in Higher Biology? The answer changes, and understanding why it changes tells you how to plan your practice.

01How SQA grade boundaries work

Grade boundaries are not fixed. Qualifications Scotland, the awarding body that replaced the SQA in February 2026, sets them after the exam has been sat and marked, based on how difficult that year's paper turned out to be in practice. If a paper is harder than intended, boundaries drop. If it is more accessible, they rise.

Your course award is now out of 125 marks: 100 from the single question paper (Section 1 multiple choice worth 20 marks, Section 2 worth 80) and 25 from the assignment, which is 20 raw marks scaled to 25. The boundary applies to that combined total, which is why a strong assignment gives you real insurance.

02Roughly what each grade has needed

Across recent years, the A boundary in Higher Biology has generally landed somewhere around the low to mid 70s as a percentage of the total, with B around the low 60s, C around the low 50s and D just below that. Some years have been a few marks either side.

Do not plan around the boundary. Plan around the paper.

If your target is the A boundary, you have no margin for a bad question. Aim for eighty per cent and the boundary stops mattering.

03Where the marks are actually lost

Marking your own papers honestly for a term tells you something the boundary never will: almost nobody loses an A on content they had never seen. They lose it in three places.

Vague answers. Writing "the enzyme changes shape" where the mark scheme wants "the active site changes shape so the substrate can no longer bind". Same idea, no mark.

Command word errors. Describing when the question said explain, or explaining when the question said describe and then running out of time later in the paper.

Data handling slips. Percentage increase calculated on the wrong baseline, an axis misread, a range bar ignored. These are the cheapest marks in the paper and the most commonly dropped.

04Building the margin

Two things build margin quickly.

First, the assignment. It is 20 marks out of 120, it is written with your research in front of you, and the marking criteria are published. A student who gets 17 or 18 out of 20 can afford to lose several marks in the exam and still clear the A boundary. A student who gets 11 has to be nearly perfect in May.

Second, the inquiry skills. Graphs, controls, validity, reliability, conclusions and calculations appear in every single paper and are worth a large share of Paper 2. They are learnable in a few weeks, they do not decay like content does, and they are the same skills the assignment is marked on.

05A realistic timeline

From January, one full paper a fortnight, marked with the official marking instructions, with every lost mark logged by reason rather than by topic. From April, one paper a week, all to time. By the last fortnight, stop learning new content and spend the time re-doing questions you previously got wrong.

That is not a heavier workload than most students already do. It is the same hours pointed at the thing that is actually being marked.

06The fastest single change

Mark your own work to the official marking instructions rather than to your own sense of whether you got the idea. The gap between "I knew that" and "that would have scored" is almost exactly the gap between a B and an A.
