SQA Higher Biology course specification: every unit, learning outcome and what is actually examined

A plain English breakdown of the SQA Higher Biology course specification, the three units, the course code, and which learning outcomes come up in the exam most.

The SQA Higher Biology course specification is the document that decides what can appear in your exam. It is also written for teachers, not for students, which is why almost nobody reads it. This guide translates it.

01The course at a glance

Higher Biology sits at SCQF level 6 and is worth 24 SCQF credit points. The course code is C807 76, and the course assessment is made up of a question paper worth 100 marks, split into Paper 1 and Paper 2, plus the assignment, which is worth 20 marks. That gives 120 marks in total, so the assignment is a sixth of your final grade.

The course is split into three areas: DNA and the genome, metabolism and survival, and sustainability and interdependence.

02Area 1: DNA and the genome

This unit covers the structure of DNA, replication, the cell cycle, gene expression, mutations, evolution, and genomic sequencing. The key skills are describing complementary base pairing accurately, explaining transcription and translation in the right order with the right molecules, and distinguishing between types of mutation and their consequences.

The exam loves this unit for extended response questions. Protein synthesis and the control of gene expression are two of the most frequently examined extended answers in the whole course.

03Area 2: Metabolism and survival

Metabolic pathways, control of metabolic pathways, cellular respiration, energy systems in muscle cells, metabolism in conformers and regulators, metabolic rate, surviving adverse conditions, environmental control of metabolism, and genetic control of metabolism.

This is the unit that produces the most data handling questions. Anything involving enzymes, induced fit, activation energy, inhibitors, or the electron transport chain will show up somewhere in the paper. It is also the unit where precise vocabulary earns marks: competitive versus non competitive inhibition, end product inhibition, and the difference between a substrate and a product must be word perfect.

04Area 3: Sustainability and interdependence

Food supply, plant and animal breeding, crop protection, animal welfare, symbiosis, social behaviour, components of biodiversity, and threats to biodiversity.

Students consistently underestimate this unit because it feels less technical. It is heavily examined, and it contains a lot of marks that are pure recall, which makes it the cheapest place on the course to pick up grades.

The third unit is the easiest place in Higher Biology to gain ten marks in a fortnight.

05Skills of scientific inquiry

Running through all three units are the inquiry skills, and these are examined in every paper. You need to be able to plan and design an experiment, identify controls and variables, evaluate reliability and validity, process data including percentages, ratios and averages, draw and read graphs including dual axis graphs and range bars, and draw a conclusion supported by the data.

These skills carry a very large share of the marks in Paper 2 and they are independent of content. That means you can gain them in a few weeks even if your content knowledge is patchy. If you are chasing an A, this is where the fastest gains are.

06What the specification means by command words

The specification uses a small set of command words, and each one has a fixed cost.

State or name wants one word or one short phrase and nothing more. Describe wants what happens, in order, with no explanation of why. Explain wants a reason, and almost always the word "because" or "so that" belongs in your answer. Suggest wants a plausible biological idea, and there is usually more than one accepted answer. Predict wants a specific outcome, not a description of the trend. Compare wants both sides named in the same sentence.

Losing marks on command words is the most common way strong students end up with a B.

07The assignment

The assignment is 20 marks, researched in class and written up under exam conditions. It has its own guide on this site because it is the part of the course where the marks are most predictable and most often thrown away.

08How to use the specification for revision

Print the list of learning outcomes and go through it line by line, marking each one green, amber or red. Then do this: for every red, find one past paper question on it and answer that question. Not read the notes on it, answer a question on it. Turning the specification into a checklist of questions rather than a checklist of topics is the single change that makes it useful.
