How to get an A in Higher Biology, from students who did

Most Higher Biology advice is written by people who last sat an exam in 1998, or by content farms that have never sat one at all. This is written by students who sat Scottish Highers within the last few years, got straight As, and remember precisely which bits were hard.

Here is the uncomfortable thing we noticed: almost nobody who gets a B in Higher Biology gets a B because they do not know enough biology. They get a B because of how they answer questions, how they spend their time, and which 20% of the course they quietly avoided.

01Find out what an A actually costs

Grade boundaries move every year. They are published on results day and they are the most useful piece of information available to you, and hardly anyone looks them up.

Knowing that an A has historically sat somewhere in the region of 70% changes the entire psychology of revision. You are not chasing perfection. You are chasing a specific, finite number of marks, and there are marks in the paper you are allowed to lose.

Work backwards. Take the course total, take the boundary, and you have a target. Then find out where you are losing marks against it, which requires the next point.

02Mark your own papers against the marking instructions, ruthlessly

This is the highest-return activity in Higher Biology revision, and most students do a soft version of it.

The soft version: you do a past paper, you check your answers, you think "yeah, I basically said that", you give yourself the mark, you move on.

The real version: you do a past paper, you open the marking instructions, and you award marks only where your answer contains the specific thing the marking instruction requires. Not the general idea. The specific thing.

Higher Biology marking instructions are unusually explicit. They tell you the exact points that earn marks and the acceptable alternatives. When you mark honestly against them, a pattern shows up within three papers. Almost always it is one of these: describing a process but not naming the structure or molecule involved, answering "describe" when the question said "explain", giving one point when the question was worth two marks, or using a vague verb like "affects" or "changes" where the mark needed a direction such as increases, decreases, denatures or binds.

You cannot fix a pattern you have not identified. Three honestly-marked papers will identify it.

03Count the marks and write exactly that many points

A two-mark question wants two distinct points. A three-mark question wants three. This sounds too simple to be worth saying and it is the most common reason capable students lose marks.

Before you write, look at the mark allocation and physically count the ideas you are about to include. If a question is worth three marks and your answer contains two ideas expressed at length, you have written a beautiful two-mark answer.

The inverse is also true. Do not write six points for a two-mark question. You gain nothing and you have just spent time you needed in Section 2.

04Learn the command words as if they were vocabulary

Higher Biology questions are precision instruments, and the first word tells you the shape of the answer.

State, name and give want one short fact. One line, no explanation, and you get nothing for elaborating. Describe wants what happens: the sequence of events, without the mechanism. Explain wants why it happens, and a description scores zero on an explain question no matter how accurate it is. Suggest means you are not expected to know this, so apply your biology to the unfamiliar information given in the question. Compare means you must mention both things in the same sentence, because two separate paragraphs about two things is not a comparison.

Students lose whole marks answering the right biology to the wrong command word. Take ten past paper questions, cover the answers, and just write down what shape of answer each one wants. You will be wrong more often than you expect.

05Attack the skills marks, not just the knowledge

A meaningful proportion of Higher Biology marks are not for recall at all. They are for scientific inquiry, analytical thinking and problem solving: reading graphs, calculating percentage change, ratios, interpreting unfamiliar experimental setups, and evaluating validity and reliability.

These marks are available to you whether or not you have revised that topic, because the information you need is in the question. Students who are strong on content and weak on skills leave these on the table year after year, and they are the cheapest marks in the paper.

Practise them separately. Take every data-handling and calculation question from five past papers, do them in one sitting, and you will see the same six question types recur. They are patterns, not surprises.

06Stop avoiding the topic you hate

Every Higher Biology student has one key area they quietly do not revise. For a lot of people it is Metabolism and Survival. For others it is the ecology and food supply content in Sustainability and Interdependence, which feels less like "real" biology and gets neglected.

Marks are distributed proportionally across the course content. Avoiding a key area does not remove those marks from the paper, it just hands them to someone else.

List every key area in DNA and the Genome, Metabolism and Survival, and Sustainability and Interdependence. Rate your confidence out of five. Then revise in ascending order of confidence, not descending. It is unpleasant for two weeks and then it is the reason you get an A.

07Practise extended responses in writing, not in your head

Extended response questions carry real weight in Section 2, and they are the questions students prepare for least, because reading a model answer feels like preparation and it is not.

Spend ninety seconds planning: list the points you will make before writing a sentence. Structure matters less than coverage, because a marker awarding a six-mark extended response is looking for six creditable points, not elegant prose. Bullet-style clarity beats flowing paragraphs.

Then write it out, in full, by hand, timed. You will discover that the answer you thought you knew takes four minutes longer than you had budgeted, and it is far better to discover that in October than in May.

08Take the assignment seriously in September

Twenty marks, scaled to 25, decided months before the exam with the criteria available to you in advance. Students who casually drop five marks here then need five extra marks in the exam hall under time pressure, which is a much worse trade.

09Do one full timed mock under the new single-paper format

The exam is now one paper: Section 1 multiple choice worth 20 marks, Section 2 worth 80, 100 marks total, 2 hours 30 minutes. Managing that time is a skill, and it is not one you can acquire on the day.

10What we would tell our S5 selves

Do past papers earlier than feels reasonable. Mark them harshly. Find the two ways you lose marks and fix those, rather than re-reading notes on things you already know, which is comfortable and does nothing.

An A in Higher Biology is not a talent thing. It is a fairly small number of specific, identifiable, boring corrections, applied consistently from October.
