Resitting Higher Biology: how it works and how to actually improve

Resitting Higher Biology is common, completely normal, and one of the more reliable ways to change an application. Here is how it works and how to make it count.

01How a resit works

You sit the full course assessment again in the next exam diet, usually in S6 alongside Advanced Highers, or at a college as a part-time or evening course. Adults and school leavers can also enter through a college or as a private candidate.

Your best grade is the one that stands. A resit cannot take away the grade you already have, and both attempts appear on your record with the higher grade counting for university applications in almost every case. Check the specific policy of any medicine, dentistry or veterinary course you are applying to, because a small number of competitive courses do ask about resits.

02The assignment

You may need to complete the assignment again depending on how your centre enters you. It is worth 20 raw marks scaled to 25 out of a 125-mark course, so it is a fifth of your grade and it is the component you can control most calmly. Ask your centre early whether your previous assignment mark carries forward.

03The new exam structure

Higher Biology now has a single question paper: Section 1 multiple choice worth 20 marks, Section 2 worth 80 marks, 100 marks in total, 2 hours 30 minutes. If you sat the old two-paper format, this is the biggest practical change to how you prepare.

04The resit plan that works

Start with diagnosis, not revision. Get your paper back if you can, or work through the past paper you sat with the marking instructions open, and be brutal about where the marks went. Most resit candidates do not have a knowledge problem, they have two or three repeated technique problems.

Then work in this order. Fix the technique pattern you found. Cover the key area you avoided last year, in ascending order of confidence. Sit one full timed mock under the new single-paper format by December. Do the assignment properly and early.

A resit year gives you something you did not have the first time: you already know the shape of the exam, and you know exactly which parts of it beat you. That is a real advantage if you use it in August rather than in April.
