Higher Biology marking instructions: how markers award marks, and the command words that decide your grade

What the SQA Higher Biology marking instructions really mean, how a marker reads your answer, and how to write answers that cannot be refused a mark.

Two students can know the same biology and finish twenty marks apart. Almost all of that gap is in how the answer is written. This guide is about how the SQA Higher Biology marking instructions work and how to write for them.

01What a marker is actually doing

A marker is not judging whether you understand the topic. They are checking your answer against a list of acceptable responses and deciding whether what you wrote matches one of them. Marks are positive: they can only be given, never taken away for extra material, unless the extra material contradicts the correct part. That has two consequences.

You should never leave a question blank, because an attempt costs nothing.

You should never contradict yourself, because a wrong statement beside a right one can cancel the mark.

02Command words and what each one costs

State, name, give, identify. One word or one short phrase. Do not explain. Do not write a sentence when a term is wanted.

Describe. What happens, in the correct order, with no reason. If a process is described out of order, the mark goes.

Explain. What happens and why. If your answer does not contain a "because", a "so that", or a clear causal link, check it again.

Suggest. A plausible biological idea. Marking instructions for these questions usually end with "or any other suitable response", which means your own reasoning is accepted if it is biologically sound. Commit to one answer, do not offer three.

Predict. The specific outcome, with a direction and ideally a value. "It would change" earns nothing. "It would fall to around 20 units" earns the mark.

Compare. Both things in the same statement. "A is higher than B" is a comparison. "A is high. B is low." often is not.

Calculate. Show the working and give the unit. A correct method with an arithmetic slip usually still scores something. A bare wrong number scores zero.

More than half of the marks lost by strong Higher Biology candidates are command word errors, not knowledge gaps.

03Answer length: match the mark allocation

One mark, one point. Three marks, three distinct points. Students frequently write a beautiful paragraph that makes the same point three times and scores one.

Before you write, count the marks and plan that many separate ideas. For extended responses, bullet your ideas in the margin first, then write.

04The vocabulary that gets ticked

Higher Biology marking instructions accept precise terms and reject the everyday equivalents. Some of the most common:

Active site, not "the bit the substrate goes in". Complementary, not "matching". Denatured, not "broken". Affinity, not "sticks well". Concentration gradient, not "more on one side". Selectively permeable, not "lets some things through". Statistically significant, not "a big difference". Reliability, which is about repeats and consistency, and validity, which is about controlling variables. Those two are not interchangeable and markers are strict about it.

05Data questions

For every data question, do three things before writing. Read the axis labels and units. Note whether the scale is linear. Check whether the question asks for the value, the change, or the percentage change, because those are three different numbers.

Percentage change is calculated on the original value. Percentage of a total is calculated on the total. Getting the wrong baseline is the single most common calculation error in the paper.

06Experimental design questions

These have a fixed structure and are therefore free marks once learned. Identify the independent variable, the dependent variable, and at least two variables that must be kept constant. Explain the purpose of the control, which is to show the effect is due to the independent variable and nothing else. Distinguish repeats within the experiment, which improve reliability, from controlling variables, which improves validity.

07How to practise this

Take one past paper you have already done. Do not redo it. Instead, go through your original answers with the official marking instructions and rewrite every answer that lost a mark, in the wording the mark scheme accepts. Twenty minutes of that is worth more than a full new paper.
