Higher Biology extended response questions: how to write the big answers
How to plan and write the extended response questions in Higher Biology Paper 2, with the topics that come up most and the structure that gets full marks.

The extended response questions at the end of Higher Biology Paper 2 are worth several marks each and they are the most predictable marks in the exam. They are also where tired students give up. Here is how to make them routine.
01What they are
An extended response asks you to give an account of a topic, usually worth between four and nine marks. There is no essay style mark: you are awarded one mark per correct, relevant biological point, from a published list. That means the winning strategy is not elegant writing. It is coverage.
02Plan before you write
Spend one minute writing a list of key terms in the margin. For protein synthesis that might be: RNA polymerase, primary transcript, introns, exons, splicing, mature mRNA, ribosome, codon, anticodon, tRNA, amino acid, peptide bond, polypeptide.
Then write the answer using every term on your list in order. The plan guarantees coverage and stops you circling one idea for a paragraph.
One mark per point means your answer should contain more separate points than the question is worth. Overshoot by two.
03Structure
Write in short, complete sentences, one point each. Use the correct sequence when the topic is a process, since order is often part of the mark. Diagrams are allowed and can earn marks if they are labelled, but they do not replace the written points.
Do not write an introduction. Do not restate the question. Start with the first biological point.
04The topics that come up most
Protein synthesis, including transcription, splicing and translation.
Cellular respiration, especially the electron transport chain and the role of oxygen as the final electron acceptor.
Photosynthesis, both stages, with the Calvin cycle named correctly.
Control of metabolic pathways, including induced fit, competitive and non competitive inhibition, and end product inhibition.
Thermoregulation and negative feedback in regulators.
Natural selection and speciation, including isolation barriers.
Biodiversity, its three components and the threats to it.
Breeding methods, including inbreeding depression and F1 hybrid vigour.
If you can write a strong answer on each of those eight, you have covered the large majority of the extended responses that appear.
05Practise them separately
Extended responses are a distinct skill. Set aside one session a week where you write two of them from memory, in ten minutes each, then mark them with the official marking instructions and count how many listed points you hit. Log the points you missed and rewrite the answer including them.
Doing that for eight weeks is usually worth several marks in the real paper, and those marks come at the end of Paper 2 where most candidates are weakest.
