Higher Biology appeals 2026: how the process works and whether to use it
The 2026 appeals window closes Tuesday 11 August. How Qualifications Scotland appeals work, who can submit one, and an honest answer on whether it is worth it.

If your Higher Biology grade was lower than expected, an appeal is one option. It is worth understanding what it actually is before you pin any hopes on it.
01What an appeal is, and is not
An appeal is a re-mark of your original exam paper against the marking instructions. It is not a re-grade based on your prelim, your coursework or your teacher's estimate. A marker checks whether your script was marked correctly.
02Who submits it
Your school or college submits appeals to Qualifications Scotland on your behalf. You cannot submit one yourself as a candidate at school. Speak to your head of biology or the school's SQA coordinator as soon as possible after results day.
03The deadline
For the 2026 diet, results are issued on Tuesday 4 August 2026 and the appeals window closes Tuesday 11 August 2026. That is one week, including a weekend, so the conversation with your school needs to happen in the first day or two.
Priority appeals, for candidates whose university or college place depends on the outcome, are handled first. Say clearly and early if that is your situation.
04The honest part
Your grade can go down as well as up. A re-mark corrects the mark in either direction, and the decision is final.
Appeals succeed most often where the grade is far below every other signal: a strong prelim, strong coursework, and consistently strong performance in class. If your result is one or two marks below a boundary and your prelim told the same story, a re-mark is less likely to change anything.
05What to do alongside an appeal
Do not wait for the outcome before planning. Look at a resit, talk to your school about S6 options, and if you have a university place at risk, contact the admissions office directly and tell them an appeal is in progress. Universities deal with this every August and they would rather know.
Always check the current appeals guidance on the official Qualifications Scotland site, because dates and eligibility can change year to year.
